Enabling grid-friendly charging through costumer interface in residential areas
The development of intelligent charging infrastructure in residential areas plays a central role in a successful switch to e-mobility in order to achieve climate neutrality. In order to ensure a smooth transition and avoid bottlenecks in the electricity grid, the project friendlyCharge aims to develop and demonstrate an innovative solution for demand-oriented and grid-friendly charging in residential areas.
In cooperation with the friendlyCharge research project, e-vo is therefore committed to the development of an innovative, user-friendly charging infrastructure in residential areas. The aim is a smooth, grid-friendly charging of electric vehicles without restrictions for the users of electric vehicles. The project deals with the development of an interface for real-time communication between the power grid and the users, taking into account communication security and legal-regulatory aspects.

The interplay between ‘distribution grid’, ‘energy trading’ and the flexibilities in electromobility have enormous (national) economic potential. In this project, we show how intelligent e-mobility solutions can be used to implement robust and secure network-friendly integrations of charging stations and other consumers.

Research project
Flexible load management of e-bus fleets
Verkehrsverbund Vorarlberg GmbH sees the future of the bus fleet in battery-electric buses (BEB) and is expanding to 134 buses by 2025 and a total of 200 buses in less than 10 years. The EBusCharge project at the FHV's Research Centre for Energy accompanies this ambitious infrastructure project, develops and researches technical solutions for the charging management of growing e-bus fleets.
Project objective
The aim of the project is to research important planning guidelines for Austrian network operators and transport associations for the successful integration of scaling e-bus fleets into regional energy systems. The challenge here is not only to look for a successful, but also for a grid-friendly, infrastructurally sustainable and climate-friendly as well as economically optimal solution for the integration of the e-bus fleets into the higher-level energy system.
Together, the project partners want to develop, test and evaluate intelligent charging strategies by examining the technological constraints and needs at a currently available location in Feldkirch, with a focus on an operator solution. Since a complete transition to zero-emission public transport is sought, concepts for nationwide expansion are also being explored. In a coupled distribution network simulation, fleet loading management approaches for all planned locations in the Vorarlberg region are investigated. The impact and potential costs for the energy system as well as the potential benefits of charging management are estimated.
For us, the two research projects EBusCharge and FreeE-Bus offer the opportunity to enter into exchanges with bus operators and transport associations, thus expanding our expertise in the field of e-buses.

flexible, responsive, renewable, efficient e-buses
In public transport, many diesel buses are to be replaced by electric buses. However, the large-scale operation of e-bus fleets is still untested. The project collects measurement data and IT framework conditions of the charging infrastructure as well as experiences and needs in the Lake Constance area in order to develop an optimized charging management. An optimization model generates control signals for the e-buses and the charging infrastructure on the basis of current timetable, weather and energy network information.
Project objective
In the project, an optimized charging management for e-buses in the public transport of the Lake Constance area will be developed. Optimum charging curves are created from the determined parameters of the technical infrastructure as well as from current system information. Sustainable, cost-efficient and flexible charging management is intended to support the transformation of the still fossil-fuelled public transport system into climate-friendly e-mobility. At the same time, transnational knowledge transfer is to be promoted.
