The digital DNA of the mobility transition

e-vo Managing Director Ute Teufelberger on the necessary prerequisites and what role intelligent software plays in the mobility transition.

The electric car is facing a fundamental paradigm shift: With the advent of bidirectional charging, it becomes an active part of the energy system from a pure consumer. In an interview with Austrian Business Woman, e-vo Managing Director Ute Teufelberger discussed which prerequisites are still missing and what role intelligent software plays in the mobility transition.

Bidirectional charging: Technology is ready

In the future, electric vehicles will not only be able to absorb and store electricity, but will also be able to flexibly feed this energy back into buildings (vehicle-to-home) or directly into the higher-level power grid (vehicle-to-grid) if required. This turns them into decentralized energy storage systems that can help to efficiently cushion critical peaks in the power grid and stabilize the overall system.

Both new electric cars and modern wall boxes are technically compatible. Large-scale pilot projects have already shown several times that bidirectional charging works. Why has the technology not yet arrived in everyday life?

"The real challenge lies not so much in the hardware as in the regulatory framework and the still too low market penetration," said Ute Teufelberger.

For a wide range of applications, a uniform, standardized protocol between the car, the charging point and the respective energy dealer is required.

Reliable legal framework conditions are just as crucial. They must create the basis for legally compliant contracts between car owners and electricity dealers. There are still many open questions: How is the resupply remunerated? What specific roles do market participants play? And how can measurement, billing and network usage be easily and unbureaucratically regulated?

This is where e-vo comes in with its software platform. It creates the conditions to control charging points and make data usable as well as to bill charging processes transparently. This creates the necessary digital basis for bidirectional charging step by step.

Intelligent charging makes e-trucks more economical

Software is also becoming a decisive factor in heavy traffic. When switching to electric trucks, it is not only the purchase price that counts, but the entire energy system behind it.

"The most important lever is and remains the strategic depot store", says Teufelberger.

Companies need to analyse their driving profiles, downtime and actual energy requirements. Intelligent software prioritizes vehicles, avoids expensive load peaks and takes into account the available network performance. In this way, every truck is ready in time for its next deployment. The backend of e-vo takes over the control and supports the economical use of the charging infrastructure.

With platform logic from the wholesale dilemma

Charging infrastructure is always a wholesale model at the beginning: You have to invest before the full capacity is there. This dilemma cannot be solved with individual measures, but with platform logic. A charging point becomes economically interesting if it works reliably, is easy to find, can be used easily and is billed cleanly.

“Charging infrastructure becomes profitable when it functions as part of a digital energy system. This is exactly what e-vo was founded for.”, says Ute Teufelberger.
